Buddhism originated in India by a man named Siddhartha Guatama. It was not until 200 A.D. that the religion was brought to China. Siddhartha Guatama was born in 563 B.C. and died in 483 B.C. After realizing that life was an endless cycle of pain and that the only way to escape was to seek knowledge, Siddhartha went on a six year quest beginning in 534 B.C. Over these six years Siddhartha meditated and at the age of 35, became enlightened. This was roughly the year 528 B.C. At this time Siddhartha became known as "The Enlightened One" or Buddha. His teachings and the example of his life became the basis for Buddhism. Those who practice Buddhism meditate, worship buddha,,attempt to escape suffering, and strive for Nirvana so that they need not suffer another life. Some statues of Buddha known as "The Laughing Buddha" are commonly portrayed wth a big belly to symbolize wealth, a smile to symbolize happiness, and children to symbolize the love of children.
Buddha taught that to reach enlightenment one must follow the eightfold path.
1: right knowledge
2: right purpose
3: right speech
4: right action
5: right living
6: right effort
7: right mindfulness
8: right meditation
Buddha taught to live by the four noble truths
1: everyone is subject to pain, sickness, and death no matter what.
2: self-centered desires are the cause of all suffering.
3: to escape suffering to rid yourselves of desires.
4: One can reach enlightenment by living a ethical, comppasionate life, in which meditation, and ridual participation are commonly practiced.
